Located just a few hours away, this makes for a great day trip from Bangkok, but we recommend heading here for a few days, to really experience the best the area has to offer. There are plenty of ways to travel from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, so let’s explore the best things to do!

Best things to do in Kanchanaburi

1. Bridge over the River Kwai

The iconic Bridge over the River Kwai is a significant historical site, built during World War II. The bridge was part of the Death Railway built by Allied prisoners of war and Asian laborers under harsh conditions. The bridge symbolizes the sacrifices and resilience of these individuals and is a solemn reminder of the impact of war.

Visitors can walk across the bridge, take photos, and reflect on its history. Train rides over the bridge are also available, offering scenic views of the river and surrounding jungle. 2. Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum

Hellfire Pass was one of the most challenging sections of the railway to construct, and many prisoners lost their lives here. The Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum was built to honor these individuals, teaching and remembering the challenges and lose of this constructions. 

Explore the museum exhibits, which provide a comprehensive look at the brutal conditions faced by the laborers but also hike along the Hellfire Pass Trail. This follows part of the original railway route and is an intense but rewarding experience.

3. Erawan National Park and Erawan Waterfalls

The Sai Yok Noi and Sai Yok Yai Waterfalls are major attractions here, and you might even spot some of the rare species that live within the park.

8. Jeath War Museum

Situated near the Bridge over the River Kwai, the Jeath War Museum was founded by a monk and is designed to resemble the bamboo huts that POWs lived in during the war.

9. Srinakarin Dam and National Park

Another one of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi, is the Srinakarin Dam. This is one of Thailand’s largest dams, and the surrounding area is a scenic spot for picnicking and water activities.
